Ridgefield Park firefighters had their hands full when they arrived at a fully involved house fire on February 7th, 2018.
At just around 00:40 hours, a 911 call was received from the sole occupant of the home at 110 Brinkerhoff Street, reporting a fire.
First arriving police officers attempted to gain entry but were unable to due to heavy smoke and fire.
As fire companies arrived, a 2nd alarm was requested, and hand lines were stretched into the, but the firefighters were quickly forced out as the building became well involved. With the occupant unaccounted for and heavy fire conditions, command requested a 3rd alarm. Numerous outside hand lines, 1 ladder pipe, and 2 blitz guns were put into operation, and command reported all visible fire knocked down at 02:45 hours.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital and after the companies were able to re-enter the building, where the body of the occupant was located. The cause of the fire is under investigation; however, it has been reported that the owner lived off the grid and relied on wood burning stoves, butane heaters, generators, and solar panels.
